Outsourcing Trends in the Nordics
Heike Schön, the Managing Director of Lumis Life Science Consulting GmbH, presented an insightful overview of outsourcing trends in the Nordic regions at the COG Nordics meeting on the 9th April, 2024. Heike highlighted several key drivers for growth in the outsourcing market, including the increased demand for complex large molecules, higher prevalence of rare diseases worldwide, and the growing role of small to midsize biopharmaceutical companies with expanding product pipelines.
One of the most significant takeaways from Heike's presentation was the shift in focus from large pharmaceutical companies to small and midsize biopharmaceutical and medical device companies. These smaller companies, which rely heavily on outsourcing due to their lack of infrastructure and resources, are expected to drive the greatest growth in the clinical contract-research-organisation (CRO) market.
Heike also emphasised the importance of CROs adapting to the heterogeneous set of resources and capabilities required by these smaller companies. To improve their services, CROs must align with virtual and small company structures, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in their partnerships.
The presentation also touched on the increasing use of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and real-world evidence (RWE), to support innovation in drug development. This trend is expected to lead to more specialisation among service providers, with new players like digital twins and AI software developers entering the market.
As the Nordic biopharma sector navigates the challenges and opportunities ahead, Heike's presentation suggests that focusing on digitalisation, data, and new partnerships will be crucial for success in the coming years. Lumis' insight provided a valuable perspective on the evolving landscape of outsourcing in the Nordic regions.
